Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 14, 2026
Introduction
Unwrapped is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use Unwrapped, including the services you reach from unwrapped.chat.
Unwrapped offers two free experiences built from WhatsApp chat exports, and they handle your data differently:
- Unwrapped Recap turns a chat into a shareable recap (called a "Wrap" below).
- Unwrapped Quiz turns chats into a quiz that you review and play live with friends.
We take your privacy seriously and have designed both with data protection in mind. The sections at the end of this page (your rights, security, children, contact) apply to both.
About Unwrapped
Unwrapped is not a company. It is a personal, non-commercial project created and maintained by a solo developer as a fun side project. There are no money-making aspirations, no investors, and no business entity behind it.
This means your data is handled by an individual, not a corporation. The service exists purely for fun and to provide value to WhatsApp users who want to explore their chat history in a creative way.
Unwrapped Recap
The sections below, up to Unwrapped Quiz, apply to recaps (Wraps) created at unwrapped.chat.
Information We Collect
1. Chat Data You Upload (processed, not stored)
When you upload a WhatsApp chat export file (.txt or .zip), your browser sends its text to our server, which processes it in memory:
- Message timestamps and dates
- Sender names as they appear in your chat (for people who aren't in your contacts, WhatsApp shows a phone number instead of a name)
- Message content (for analysis purposes only)
- Emojis, links, and media indicators
If you choose Anonymize names, sender names are replaced before the analysis starts (see below).
2. What a Recap Stores (for 90 days)
Each recap (Wrap) is saved in our database so its link works. It contains data derived from your chat:
- The recap name (the name you enter, or one detected from the export)
- Message, member and media counts, the date range, and hourly/daily activity patterns
- Member names (or phone numbers shown as names) for up to 50 of the most active members, with their participation metrics and favorite emojis, unless you choose Anonymize names
- Highlights that name a member, such as the longest message, night owl, most questions or exclamation marks, and who used a phrase most
- The most frequently repeated word and phrase from your chat (a phrase is at most about 100 characters)
- Top emojis and link domains (not full URLs)
- AI-generated insights: a chat personality, traits, and discussion themes, each with a short quote copied from the chat (we ask the AI for quotes of up to 50 characters and never store more than 200 characters) and the member who talks about it most
- Technical fields: the chosen style, whether names were anonymized, the creation date, view counts, and a secret delete key
3. Technical Data
We automatically collect:
- IP address, used only to prevent abuse (10 recaps per network per day). We store a salted, one-way hash of it with the recap, never the address itself, and delete that hash after 24 hours
- Basic usage analytics (page views, feature usage), as described under Product Analytics
- Browser type and device information
The "Anonymize names" Option
When you tick Anonymize names, every sender is replaced with a label ("Member 1", "Member 2", … in order of how much they wrote) at the very start of the analysis. Every statistic, the messages sent to OpenAI and the saved recap then use these labels, so real sender names are not stored and not sent to OpenAI. We also remove sender names, @mentions of phone numbers and the names of individual chat members from message text where we can detect them.
Names written inside messages can't always be detected (for example nicknames, misspellings, very short names, or people who never wrote in the chat), so a short quote or repeated phrase may still contain a name. Please check your recap before you share it. Recaps created before October 14, 2026 with this option still hold real names in our database, even though they aren't displayed; they are deleted on the same 90-day schedule, or sooner if you ask us.
Who Can See a Recap
- Anyone with the link: A recap has an unlisted, hard-to-guess link. There is no login, so anyone you (or anyone else) share the link with can open it.
- Not in search engines: Recap pages tell search engines not to index them.
- Link previews: When the link is shared in an app such as WhatsApp, the preview shows the recap name and its message and member counts.
- Us: We don't browse recaps, except where needed to keep the service running, investigate abuse or respond to a request from you.
What Recap Does NOT Store
- Full message content - Your complete chat messages are not stored. Only the short snippets described above (quotes of at most 200 characters, the most repeated word and phrase) are kept as part of your Wrap's insights
- Your uploaded file - The original .txt or .zip file is processed in memory and then discarded
- Contact details - No emails or profile pictures. Phone numbers are only stored where WhatsApp shows them as a member's name (choose Anonymize names to avoid this)
- Your IP address - Only a salted, one-way hash, deleted after 24 hours
- User accounts - We don't require registration or collect account details
How We Use Your Information
- Generate your Wrap: Compute statistics, create visualizations, and generate AI insights
- Create shareable URL: Store the recap data described above so you and the people you share the link with can view it for 90 days
- Rate limiting: Use a hashed form of your IP address to prevent abuse (10 wraps per network per day)
- Service improvement: Analyze anonymous usage patterns to improve the product
Third-Party Services
OpenAI (AI Analysis)
To generate AI-powered insights about your chat, we send the following to OpenAI's API (currently gpt-4.1-mini and gpt-4o-mini):
- A sample of up to 100 text messages, each truncated to 200 characters, with its sender name (or the "Member" label if you chose Anonymize names)
- Basic chat statistics (message count, date range, messages per day, peak hour)
- Up to 10 frequently repeated phrases and up to 10 frequently repeated words (with how often they appear), so the AI can pick the ones highlighted in your Wrap
Under OpenAI's API policy, API data is not used to train its models by default, but OpenAI may keep API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse (or longer if the law requires it). See OpenAI's API data policy and Privacy Policy.
Vercel (Hosting & Infrastructure)
Our service is hosted on Vercel, which may collect standard web server logs including IP addresses and request metadata. See Vercel's Privacy Policy.
Neon (Database)
Recaps are stored in a Postgres database hosted by Neon. See Neon's Privacy Policy.
Recap Data Retention
- Uploaded files: Processed immediately and not retained
- Generated Wraps: Kept for 90 days after they are created. After 90 days the link stops working, and a cleanup job that runs every day deletes the recap from our database
- Delete it yourself: In the browser you used to create a recap, a "Delete recap" button appears on its last screen. Deleting is immediate and permanent, and the link stops working for everyone. If you no longer have that browser, email us the recap link (see Contact) and we will delete it
- IP address hashes: Deleted 24 hours after the recap is created. Our hosting provider may keep IP addresses in its standard server logs
- At OpenAI: Up to 30 days under OpenAI's API policy, as described above
People you shared a recap with may have saved screenshots or link previews, which we can't delete. Our providers may keep short-term backups for recovery for a limited period.
Unwrapped Quiz
Unwrapped Quiz turns WhatsApp chats into a quiz that you review and then play live with your friends. Unlike Recap, the Quiz keeps your uploads and drafts for a short time so you can come back and finish your quiz. Everything is temporary: Quiz data expires no later than 7 days after your last activity, and live games no later than 24 hours after they are created. This section applies only to the Quiz.
No account, just a private cookie
You don't need to sign up or give us your name or email. When you start creating a quiz, we set an anonymous, HttpOnly cookie in your browser that links you to your uploads and drafts. We store only a one-way hash of that cookie. Your session stays active while you use it: it ends no later than 7 days after your last activity, and never more than 30 days after it started. If you clear your cookies or switch browser or device, you lose access to your drafts, and we can't restore it because we don't know who you are.
Players don't need an account either. When someone joins a game, we set a separate cookie that keeps their seat in that game. It expires after 24 hours. We also remember your interface language in a cookie. These cookies are only used to make the Quiz work, not for advertising.
What the Quiz stores
- Your chat exports: The WhatsApp .txt or .zip files you upload are stored privately in Vercel Blob storage (they are not publicly accessible) and read on our servers to find stories for your questions. They are deleted within minutes of your questions being created. A chat you upload but never turn into a quiz is deleted after 24 hours.
- Chat summaries: For each chat, its name, the participant names as they appear in the chat, message counts, date range and detected languages. These are stored with your drafts in our Postgres database (hosted by Neon) so you can choose the chats and people to focus on.
- Your quiz setup: The title, your focus brief, the people you chose, the audience, the language and the number of questions.
- Messages selected for generation: Our servers pick the messages most likely to contain good stories (with sender names, dates and times). This selection and the AI's working notes are kept only while your questions are being created, so the work can resume if it is interrupted, and are deleted as soon as it finishes or fails.
- Questions and their evidence: Generated questions, answer choices and short explanations, together with the original messages that support each question and a few surrounding messages for context. The supporting messages are shown to you, the creator, so you can check each question. They are never sent to players' phones; during a live game you can choose to show a question's supporting messages on your own host screen after its answer is revealed.
- Approved quizzes and game designs: The version of the quiz you approve (its questions, answer choices and explanations only, without the supporting messages), plus your design choices (theme, photos, photo placement and captions).
- Optional photos: Photos you add (JPEG, PNG or WebP) are stored privately. We create a re-encoded WebP copy, resized and without the original file's metadata (such as EXIF location data), and delete the original file as soon as that copy is ready. Only the copy is ever shown. Photo files are not sent to OpenAI.
- Usage limits: To prevent abuse and control costs, we count uploads, generations and games per session, per day and per network. For the per-network count we store a salted, one-way hash of your IP address, never the address itself.
How AI writes your questions (OpenAI)
Questions are only generated after you tick the consent box confirming that you have permission to use the chats. We then send the following to OpenAI's API, in several steps (finding stories, writing questions and checking them):
- The selected messages, with sender names, dates and times, and the chat name
- Your quiz title, focus brief, chosen people, audience and language
- Draft questions and their supporting messages, so they can be checked against the original chat
We send these requests with OpenAI's response storage turned off, so they aren't saved in our OpenAI account for later use. Under OpenAI's API policy, API data is not used to train its models by default, but OpenAI may keep API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse (or longer if the law requires it). See OpenAI's API data policy and OpenAI's policies. AI can make mistakes, and nothing is shown to players until you approve the quiz.
Who can see what
- You: In the browser that created the quiz, you can see your chat summaries, drafts, questions and their supporting messages.
- Players: Only what you approve: the questions, answer choices and explanations, and the photos you add to the game (captions only if you choose to show them). Players also see the nicknames and scores of others in the same game. They never see your uploaded files or chat summaries. They see supporting messages only if you, as host, choose to show them on your screen after an answer is revealed (up to 8 short messages per question, kept with the game for at most 24 hours).
- Nothing is published: Uploading or generating doesn't make anything public. A game can only be joined by people who have its link, so share it only with people you're happy to show the questions to.
- Us: We don't read your chats or quizzes, except where needed to keep the service running, investigate abuse or respond to a request from you.
Live games
When you host a game, a copy of the approved questions, answer choices, explanations and your photo settings is placed in a game room that runs on Cloudflare (Durable Objects). Players join with a nickname, and the room keeps nicknames, answers and scores while the game runs. Each room expires no later than 24 hours after it is created (or earlier, if your creator session ends first), and its data is then deleted.
How long we keep Quiz data
- Creator session: Ends no later than 7 days after your last activity, and never more than 30 days after it started.
- Uploaded chat exports: Deleted within minutes of your questions being created; after 24 hours if you never create a quiz from them; never kept more than 7 days.
- Messages selected for generation: Only while your questions are being created.
- Photos, drafts, chat summaries, questions with their supporting messages, approved versions and designs: Until your session ends or you delete your data, then deleted.
- Live game rooms, including player nicknames, answers and scores: No more than 24 hours. Player cookies also expire after 24 hours.
- Hashed network counters used for usage limits: About 2 days.
- At OpenAI: Up to 30 days under OpenAI's API policy, as described above.
- Records without content: We keep minimal records that contain no chat content, names or files (such as anonymous usage counters and a note that a file was deleted) to enforce usage limits and complete deletions.
Deletion is automatic but not instant. As soon as data expires it can no longer be opened, and it is removed by a scheduled cleanup job that runs after that. Our providers may keep short-term backups for recovery for a limited period.
You can delete everything at any time: open "My quizzes" in the browser you used and choose "Delete all my data". Your quizzes, chat summaries, questions and games are deleted immediately, and uploaded files within minutes. If you no longer have that browser, email us (see Contact) with the quiz title, roughly when you created it and, if you have one, the game link, and we will delete what we can find.
Service providers
- Vercel: Hosts the Quiz website and servers, and stores uploads privately (Vercel Blob). Privacy Policy
- Neon: Postgres database for chat summaries, drafts and questions. Privacy Policy
- OpenAI: Writes and checks questions, only after your consent. API data policy
- Cloudflare: Runs live game rooms. Privacy Policy
Like any website, these providers process IP addresses and request details in their standard logs. They may process data in the United States and other countries.
Please use the Quiz with care
Only upload chats you have permission to use, and avoid chats with sensitive details such as health, money, intimate matters, children's private details, addresses, phone numbers or passwords. Remember that players will see the questions and explanations you approve. See our Terms.
Product Analytics
We use PostHog for privacy-friendly product analytics: which pages are visited and which steps are used (for example 'quiz approved' or 'game finished'), with counts and error codes only. We don't send chat content, names, quiz text or IDs, and we don't use analytics cookies; PostHog processes your IP address to count visits without storing it as an identifier.
For Recap, this includes steps such as 'recap created', 'recap shared' and which card number was viewed — never the recap's content or link.
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we don't load these analytics on unwrapped.chat. See PostHog's Privacy Policy.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction (including GDPR, CCPA), you may have the right to:
- Access the data we hold about your Wrap or quiz
- Request deletion of your Wrap or Quiz data
- Opt out of analytics tracking
- Request information about how your data is processed
You can delete a recap yourself with its "Delete recap" button in the browser that created it. To exercise these rights otherwise, please contact us at the email below with your Wrap URL. For the Quiz, which has no accounts, include the quiz title, roughly when you created it and the game link if you have one, so we can find your data.
Data Security
We implement appropriate security measures including:
- HTTPS encryption for all data transmission
- Secure cloud infrastructure (Vercel and Neon, plus Cloudflare for the Quiz)
- Database encryption at rest
- Recap: no storage of full messages or uploaded files, IP addresses kept only as salted hashes for 24 hours, and automatic deletion after 90 days
- Quiz: uploads kept in private storage that can only be reached through your session, and session cookies stored only as one-way hashes
No online service can guarantee perfect security, so please avoid uploading chats with sensitive information.
Children's Privacy
Unwrapped is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please contact us for removal.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting the new policy on this page with an updated date.
